Korean Sheet Masks:
How to Use Them,
When, and Which to Choose

📖 6 min read🎭 All Skin Types✨ Weekly Ritual

Sheet masks are one of the most recognisable symbols of Korean skincare — and also one of the most misused. Here's how to get maximum results from this deceptively simple product.

What Sheet Masks Actually Do

A sheet mask is a concentrated serum delivery system. The sheet creates an occlusive seal that prevents the serum from evaporating, forcing it to penetrate deeper than a regular serum application. The result: 15–20 minutes of intense, concentrated active ingredient absorption.

How to Use a Sheet Mask Correctly

  1. Cleanse first — always apply sheet mask on freshly cleansed skin. Applying over makeup or SPF completely blocks absorption.
  2. Apply toner first — a hydrating toner before the mask amplifies absorption. Damp skin absorbs more effectively than dry.
  3. Unfold carefully and align — take your time positioning the mask on your face so it sits flat with no air pockets.
  4. Leave on for 15–20 minutes — do not leave on for longer. As the mask dries, it begins drawing moisture back out of your skin.
  5. Remove and pat in — do not rinse. Gently remove the sheet and massage the remaining serum into your skin using light patting motions.
  6. Seal immediately with moisturiser — apply moisturiser within 60 seconds of removing the mask to trap all active ingredients underneath.
⏰ Never Leave On Too Long

This is the most common mistake. Once a sheet mask begins to dry, it reverses direction and pulls moisture from your skin. Set a 15–20 minute timer. The moment it starts feeling slightly dry at the edges — remove it.

Which Sheet Mask for Your Skin Type?

🌊 Oily / Acne-Prone

Look for: Tea tree, salicylic acid, green tea, centella asiatica. Avoid: heavy oils, thick essences. Choose lightweight water-based formulas.

🌸 Dry / Dehydrated

Look for: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, collagen, glycerin. Choose deeply hydrating masks with occlusive ingredients.

🔴 Sensitive / Reactive

Look for: Centella asiatica, beta-glucan, madecassoside, aloe. Fragrance-free essential. Avoid masks with added fragrance or essential oils.

✨ Dull / Tired

Look for: Vitamin C, niacinamide, glutathione, rice extract. Brightening masks for post-travel or when skin looks tired and grey.

🕐 Ageing / Fine Lines

Look for: PDRN, collagen, retinol (low %), peptides, EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor). Anti-ageing masks are most effective in the evening.

💧 Before Special Occasion

Hyaluronic acid + collagen combination masks give instant "glass skin" plumpness. Apply 30 minutes before applying makeup for best results.

Sheet Mask Materials — What's the Difference?

The sheet itself matters as much as the serum inside it. Different materials perform differently:

  • Cotton — Most common. Good serum retention, comfortable. Standard choice.
  • Biocellulose — Made from fermented coconut water. Adheres closely to skin contours, maximum contact. Premium option for deeper absorption.
  • Hydrogel — Two-part gel sheet with no fabric. Cooling, soothing, excellent for sensitive and inflamed skin. Does not dry out as quickly.
  • Tencel (Lyocell) — Silky, eco-friendly, good serum delivery. Increasingly common in premium K-beauty masks.

Sheet Mask FAQs

Can you reuse a sheet mask?

No — do not reuse. After 15–20 minutes of contact with your face, the mask sheet has absorbed bacteria and dead skin cells. Reusing introduces these back to your skin and creates a risk of breakouts. The remaining serum in the packet can be used on your neck, chest, or hands.

Do Korean sheet masks work better than Western ones?

Korean sheet masks generally contain higher-quality serum formulas at higher concentrations than typical Western supermarket options. Korean brands also pay more attention to sheet material quality (biocellulose, hydrogel) and ingredient transparency on packaging.

What's a PDRN mask and is it worth it?

PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a salmon DNA-derived ingredient used in medical aesthetics for tissue repair and regeneration. In sheet mask form, it significantly accelerates skin repair, reduces post-acne marks, and improves skin firmness. It's worth the premium price for anti-ageing or recovery purposes.
