How to Layer Korean
Skincare Products
in the Right Order
Apply the right products in the wrong order and you're wasting money. This is the definitive, easy-to-follow layering guide for Korean skincare โ morning and evening, step by step.
Apply Korean skincare products from thinnest to thickest consistency โ and always water-based products before oil-based products. This ensures every layer absorbs properly and doesn't block the products that follow.
The Complete Morning Routine Order
Gentle Cleanser
Wash away overnight skincare residue and natural oils. In the morning, one gentle water-based cleanser is enough โ no oil cleanser needed.
Toner
Apply immediately after cleansing on slightly damp skin. Pat gently into skin โ do not wipe. Hydrating toner in the morning prepares skin to absorb everything that follows.
Essence (Optional)
A lightweight concentrated hydrating fluid โ the signature K-beauty step. Apply by patting gently onto skin. If you use both toner and essence, essence goes second.
Vitamin C Serum
Morning is the ideal time for Vitamin C โ it boosts your SPF and fights daytime free radicals. Apply 3โ4 drops, press gently into skin, wait 60 seconds before next step.
Eye Cream
Apply with ring finger using gentle tapping motions โ never drag the delicate eye area. Apply before moisturiser so it absorbs directly into the thin skin around eyes.
Moisturiser
Seal in all previous layers with a lightweight gel or cream. Apply while skin is still slightly damp from previous steps for enhanced absorption.
SPF Sunscreen โ Always Last
The final step, always. SPF must sit on top of all other products to work correctly. Do not mix SPF into moisturiser. Apply as a standalone final step, every single morning.
Never skip SPF. Not on cloudy days, not when staying indoors, not in winter. UV-A rays penetrate windows and cause ageing even on overcast days. Korean dermatologists consider SPF the single most impactful anti-ageing step.
The Complete Evening Routine Order
Oil Cleanser
Start on dry skin. Remove SPF, makeup, and oil-based impurities. Massage 60 seconds, emulsify with water, rinse. This is the first cleanse in the double cleanse.
Water-Based Cleanser
Second cleanse to remove water-based impurities and any remaining residue. Use a gentle, low-pH formula. Pat skin dry after rinsing.
Toner or Exfoliant Toner
On regular nights: hydrating toner. 2โ3 nights per week: swap for AHA or BHA exfoliant toner to accelerate cell turnover and improve texture.
Treatment Serum or Ampoule
Evening is the best time for powerful actives โ retinol, niacinamide, or peptides. Apply targeted treatment here. If using retinol, no exfoliant on the same night.
Eye Cream
Apply before moisturiser to allow it to sink into the eye area directly.
Moisturiser
Evening moisturiser can be richer than morning. Look for ceramides and peptides in your night cream for active barrier repair while you sleep.
Sleeping Mask (2โ3ร per week)
Apply sleeping mask as the absolute final step โ it seals everything underneath and delivers concentrated actives overnight. Rinse off in the morning cleanser step.
Layering Rules That Never Change
| Rule | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Thin before thick | Heavy products form an occlusive layer โ thinner products can't penetrate through them |
| Water before oil | Oil repels water โ applying an oil product first blocks water-based products from absorbing |
| SPF always last (morning) | Applying products on top of SPF breaks down the UV filter and reduces protection |
| Wait 30โ60 seconds between actives | Gives each product time to absorb before the next layer dilutes or interferes with it |
| Less is more | Pea-size for most products. More product doesn't mean more results โ it means more waste and potential pilling |
| Never mix incompatible actives | Retinol + AHA/BHA same night = barrier damage. Rotate on different evenings instead |
Why Products "Pill" โ And How to Fix It
Pilling (when products roll off or bead up) is almost always caused by applying too much product, applying the next layer too quickly, or applying a thick product before a thin one. If pilling occurs: reduce product amount, wait longer between steps, and check your layering order.
Layering FAQs
Can I mix products before applying?
In general, no โ mixing products changes their formulation chemistry and can reduce effectiveness or cause unexpected reactions. Apply products sequentially, not mixed together. The only exception is some tinted SPFs that can be mixed with moisturiser, as directed by the manufacturer.
Do I need to use every step every day?
No. A basic routine โ cleanser, moisturiser, SPF โ is entirely sufficient daily. Exfoliants are 2โ3ร per week. Sheet masks are 1โ2ร per week. Retinol starts at 1ร per week. Build steps as your skin needs them, not all at once.
Where does face oil go in a Korean routine?
Face oil goes after moisturiser โ as the last step in the evening, or second-to-last in the morning (before SPF, which must always be final). Face oil is occlusive and seals in moisture, so it goes on top of all water-based layers.
